Cat vet visits average close to $350 in NZ, but cats are also the less-insured of the two, leaving most owners exposed.
Southern Cross Pet Insurance's own claims records show an average vet visit costs nearly $350 for cats. Tower Insurance separately estimates the broader annual cost of caring for a cat in New Zealand, with food, check-ups and extra care at around $670 a year, before any unexpected vet bills.
A national NZ survey found the average annual cost of treating a cat is $199, with 64% of cats needing at least one vet visit a year. Cats are also the less-insured species in New Zealand: Cove Insurance NZ cites reporting that roughly 1 in 10 cat owners insure their pet, compared with 1 in 5 dog owners. SPCA Pet Insurance notes around 90% of cat owners currently pay vet costs entirely out of pocket.
For a species where a single serious event can run well into the thousands (a top 2023 cat claim reported by Southern Cross reached $12,023 for a traumatic injury), that gap between low routine costs and high potential emergency costs is exactly the case for comparing cover, not just assuming a routine sized bill is the worst case.
