PD Insurance, plan by plan

Accident, Classic and Deluxe. PD's has one standout feature: no percentage co-payment on any plan.

PD Insurance is underwritten by Pacific International Insurance Pty Limited (FSP394846), which carries a B++ (Good) rating from A.M. Best. All three plans share the same excess structure (per condition) and have no percentage co-payment.

Accident Plan

PD's entry-level accident-only plan — with a narrower definition of 'accidental injury' compared to some insurers.

Where it's strong
  • No co-payment. PD reimburses 100% of every eligible claim above the excess, a structure very few NZ pet insurers offer.
  • A consultation-fee benefit is included as standard, capped at $80 (standard hours) or $200 (specialist / after-hours).
  • 0-day wait on accidental injury.
Worth knowing
  • PD's own definition of 'accidental injury' explicitly excludes cruciate ligament, patella luxation and hip/elbow dysplasia. These are common, expensive accidental conditions in certain breed of dogs.
  • No illness cover, and congenital and hereditary conditions are both listed as standing exclusions.
  • Excess is per condition per policy year, which can add up if your pet needs treatment for more than one unrelated issue in a year.

Classic Plan

Adds illness cover and hereditary conditions (after a wait) on top of the Accident Plan's terms.

Where it's strong
  • Same no co-payment as the Accident Plan.
  • Hereditary conditions are covered after a 180 day waiting period and, provided they're symptom-free before age 2. This can be useful for breeds prone to hereditary conditions like hip dysplasia 2.
  • No named sub-limit beyond the consultation-fee cap.
Worth knowing
  • Congenital conditions remain excluded policy-wide.
  • The hereditary-conditions clause only helps if symptoms show up after the pet turns 2. Conditions that present earlier are excluded.
  • No dental, emergency boarding, overseas travel or alternative medicine cover, with no add-on path on this tier.

Deluxe Plan

PD's top tier product. Adds a standard dental benefit on top of Classic's terms.

  • The best exclusions position of PD's three plans.

Worth knowing
  • Congenital conditions are still excluded policy-wide.
  • None of PD's three sub-limits (consultation, dental) scale up even though the annual limit here is double Classic's.
  • No emergency boarding, overseas travel or alternative medicine cover on any PD plan.
